Get On Your Dancing Shoes ...
Saturday, January 5, 2008
Wow .. Time is just flying by once again. The holidays are now just memories ... hopefully good ones. I've got plenty to write about .. I'm not sure what I've been so busy with the past few weeks. I guess that's just how it goes this time of year. We had some shows but, it was nothing like years in the past. Many companies have eliminated their holiday parties and that includes any entertainment that went along with that. I survive somehow or another .. it's feast or famine in this business.
The holidays were pretty quiet over at Chezaday Manor .. and that's fine with me. We had some visitors here and there .. and my mother managed to stay out of the hospital this month. In fact she just had her birthday last week. I surprised her with tickets to see her favorite show .. "Dancing with the Stars." Let me tell you it wasn't easy getting seats as this was a sold-out event. I've never really watched the show .. but, I would sit through it for mother. My brother Jeff also attended and it was a good thing ... mother needs a bit of help getting around with her condition. Sometimes it's more than one can handle.
The goal was to stay well enough for the big night and everything went just fine. The staff at the Allstate Arena were very helpful in getting mother to her seat. The lights went down and the crowd went wild. I couldn't help to think that the show could use a bit of magic to break up all the dancing, maybe next time around. Mother enjoyed herself and it was time for a late night meal at Bakers Square. I'm just glad she was well enough to go .. what would I do with the extra ticket!

The Frozen Tundra ...

The past week or so I've been going back and forth to visit my mother at the hospital. The winter is very rough on her and a slight cold turns into pneumonia easily. She's doing much better now .. although I did have to call the ambulance on Wednesday. She just got home from a week in the hospital and only days later it was time to go back. This time around she wasn't even strong enough to make it out of her bedroom. It's always pretty scary when this occurs .. but, she'll bounce back fast.
In a little over a week I'll be making the journey to a magic convention in Ohio. It will be nice to get away from all this for at least a few days. If all goes well, I'll be packing up the Chezmobile and hitting the road. It's an action packed weekend and I look forward to seeing my good friends ... and even more important a stop at Skyline Chili.
January usually bums me out .. the weather can be a bit much. We did thaw out a few weeks ago and the temps were in the 60's here in Chicago, breaking records set many years ago. They even had a few tornadoes about two hours away. Now were back in the single digits and this weekend it will be below zero .. wonderful. I must be catching something myself as I'm not feeling to hot. Of course I've got some shows on the weekend and somehow I have to pull it off. It's not like I can call in sick .. when it's your show. We've got some cool new projects I've been working on .. and you'll see all that pretty soon. Until then stay warm ... I know I'll survive somehow.

We're almost over the worst of winter .. I hope. There is only a few days left of January .. and things are finally starting to warm up out here .. if you consider 35 as a warm up. Unfortunately I've had to cancel my plans for a short road trip out to Ohio next week. My mother is back home from the hospital and doing better. Part of her recovery requires daily injections, twice a day ... so, now I can add "male nurse" to my resume. Sure I'm not happy, but what can I do ... she needs to get healthy again.
My day starts early now, just trying to get use to that .. I do like to sleep. Even if I leave my bed for just a moment, I return to 92 pounds of German Shepherd curled up right where I was sleeping. I have to maneuver around him to get back under the covers. Rex is my little buddy .. but, he keeps me warm at night.

You Are What You Eat ...

So, I stayed in last night .. which is a rare occasion. A winter storm was heading our way and it was coming fast. We dropped 50 degrees in one day .. really. Early in the morning it was really pretty nice out .. around 50. Then in the afternoon the temps started to drop .. all the way down to zero by the evening. I decided to visit my friend eBay online for a few things I couldn't live without.
For some unknown reason my brother got the urge to make some pasta .. thats spaghetti for all the non-Italians out there. So, I dug out a can of Skyline Chili one of my friends gave me before the holidays. This was my chance ... I've been dying for some. You may be confused but, a 3-way from Skyline starts out with spaghetti then chili, then a mound of cheese. You top it all off with some oyster crackers. Now if this didn't make your stomach turn, you'll see my dinner to the left. It really wasn't that bad .. it had the taste, just not the presentation. I did clean my plate and even gave Rex a sample. My mom and brother thought I was out of my mind.
The storm continued and we only managed to get out there for a very short time. The wind was cutting right through .. up to 50 miles an hour. A few inches of snow accumulated .. but, no big deal. Currently its -1 degree outside .. you get use to it.

Use It or Lose It ...
Monday, February 11, 2008
The weather has been brutal out here .. at the moment it's -4 degrees without the wind chill. A little cold outside by most standards. I was out most of Saturday with shows and earlier today I had a little time to go down into my shop for some repairs. We've got some bigger shows coming up and I've got to get things in order to hit the road. It really felt good to get my mind going again. Then it all started coming back to me .. the ideas just started to flow.
Right now I'm also involved in a project creating theatrical illusions for a play. The pieces were all coming together and I had to make some sketches before I lost the idea. That's how it goes .. I usually have a notebook near by ... everywhere I go. No joke, even when I'm driving something will pop in my head and I've got to get it on paper. I even have a notebook under my bed. Some of my best ideas come to me in my sleep. It may sound a little nutty .. but, I come up with some near genius ideas .. really. It's just about time to get some sleep, been a long day.
I bet Einstein had a notebook under his bed ...

Pleasant Valley Sunday ...

It won't be long before the hum of the neighbors mowing the lawn will wake me up after a late Saturday night. I couldn't help but feel that spring would just be around the corner as I went out for the paper with Rex this morning. The sun is out and it's already warming up .. we're at 29 degrees right now! I'll be washing cars today .. really, once it's above freezing I've got to get the salt and junk off the fleet. I really like being outside in the fresh air ... I get a little stir crazy during the winter.
Let's see .. we've been out doing shows on the weekends. This time of year we enjoy performing for the Cub Scouts and their annual Blue & Gold banquets. I too, use to be a little Cub Scout .. complete with uniform. For them .. it's boys night out, even though the rest of the family is in tow.
In other news, there was a shooting at a college in nearby DeKalb. I'm sure most of you saw that on the news. Years ago I spent a lot of time out that way as my girlfriend was going to school out there. Yes, I had a girlfriend at one point in time. Anyway, the loss those families are going through just breaks my heart. These were young students making something of themselves. They had their whole life ahead of them .. and then some scumbag takes their lives .. for no apparent reason. After it was all over, five were dead and many others injured. Oh, the shooter did take his own life .. but, I don't even count him. He truly was a waste of life.
The warning signs were all there .. but, his girlfriend was oblivious to all of it. I have many thoughts on this, it's just drives me crazy when mentally disturbed people have access to guns. This needs to be tightened up .. immediatly. I could go on and on .. don't get me started.

Please keep the students in your thoughts and prayers .. they deserved so much more out of life.

It was One Long Day ...
Tuesday, March 4, 2008
This is actually the second time I'm writing this entry, the first is lost somewhere in cyberspace. So .. we'll start with my gig on Sunday at Max & Erma's in Woodridge, you too can experience magic at your table from 5-8pm. Yes, I'll even make a few balloon animals for the kids. Of course I never thought I'd be making balloons at my age but, my friend Paul simply explained that I'll make a lot more in tips. I learned pretty fast although they all look like dogs. Sure its only three hours but when it's busy, it really takes a lot out of you .. like working an eight hour shift. Imagine stopping at almost every table in a restaurant non-stop. Then blowing up 50-100 of those skinny balloons. Needless to say I'm pretty beat after all that and I usually take it pretty easy on a Sunday evening. I like to get a full nights rest the next day, but this Monday would be a little different.
My mother had an important test scheduled at the hospital. I was up bright and early at 6am. If you didn't guess, I'm not a morning person .. go figure. We made it on time and we were happy to finally get some good news about her health ... a huge relief of course. I still had to stop home and take care of my pets, then a quick lunch at Panera with mother. Next stop K-mart to pick up a new prescription or two for her. My day wasn't even half over yet. By the time I was back home I had to get Rex ready for his dog training class. He actually looks forward to the ride in the car and seeing all the other Shepherds at school. As a special treat, I always stop at the local Burger King and pick up a few Whoppers. Now it was well after 9pm and I still had to pick up my brother at the airport. He was returning from a cruise with one of his buddies. There was a brief mishap with the luggage and then we were on our way to Batavia. Yes, more driving .. to drop off his friend. Now it was after midnight and I was really dragging. I made it through another day .. a really long day.

Good Ol' Travelin' Show ...
Sunday, March 9, 2008
Just last Friday I took the day off to visit some friends. There are still plenty of things I've got to take care of before I even get out the door. Sure enough that's when everyone needs to talk to me, the phones ringing off the hook. I was only 30 minutes behind schedule by the time I was actually on my way that of course was after a stop at the car wash, the bank and the post office. My first stop was over an hour away, in the little town of Marseilles to see Tina's little boys. If you don't know Tina's story you'll have to do some catching up here on my Chezablog. It's actually been a year since I've seen the boys because of all the chaos with my friend Stacy, that of course was Tina's little sister. Anyway, as I pulled up I saw little Collin waving to me from the window. He has the biggest smile you'll ever see. I wasn't sure if he would remember me as he was only two last time I saw him. He came running up to me and said "Steve!" Of course he's talking now .. a lot, I couldn't believe it. His brother Tyler is now six years old and getting tall. As soon as I walked in they were all over my little briefcase of magic. Their energy is amazing and their smiles contagious. I must have made a dozen different balloon sculptures for them before I had to hit the road once again.
I still had a long drive ahead to Peoria, IL to see the Spencers show. As I watched the sun set, a million thought ran through my head. Hopefully Tina is watching her boys from above .. it still breaks my heart when I think about it all. The boys are in good hands and I'll watch them grow as the years pass.
As I'm speeding down the highway I'm trusting my little GPS to find my way to Illinois Central College. It was getting dark as I'm traveling down the back roads of the mid west. Nothing but an occasional farm house in the distance. I sure hope I'm going the right way .. was all I could think. The show was at 7:30 and I made it in plenty of time to spare.
The Spencers have one of the largest traveling Illusion shows on the road right now. I've know Kevin for almost twenty years now. He was doing the college circuit when I was just getting started. It had been more than a few years since I saw his show, so it was well worth the drive. If they are ever near your area, go see their show. Get your ticket ahead of time as they've been selling out every performance .. no joke. I can't say enough good things about the Spencer's show. This is what a magic show should be. Not only does Kevin have an amazing personality that instantly connects with the audience but, he brings a semi-trailer full of equipment. All the big illusions that you rarely see these days. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a performer work out of a suite case for twice the ticket price.
Of course there's not enough room to go through the show .. but, it's a fun time. He's got some great new illusions that you just have to see .. live and in person. After the show I met up with Keith Barber, the sound engineer for the show. He's also one half of gomagicgo.com .. your magic podcast, available on iTunes. If you're into magic you need to add them to your ipod .. it's a fun show to listen to and it's free! The crew was still loading out and I had a little time to chat with Keith, Cindy and Kevin. They're working of course so, our time was limited. Kevin invited me out to eat with them, of course I wanted to catch up on a million things. The clock was ticking of course and I still had a long drive ahead of me .. 2 1/2 hours home. Now, it was 10:30pm and I already had a full day as you could see. I'm not 20 years old anymore, and I could tell Cindy was concerned that I would make it home safely. So, I had to skip the dinner but .. I wasn't leaving until I got a tour of the rig. This thing is huge!! Not only is it a full trailer but, it's got living quarters for four people. I couldn't even imagine driving that down the highway. It was very impressive .. they've really got it all figured out. I know they were tired and we said our good-byes. Next time I'll plan ahead and get a room .. I just wasn't thinking I guess. Of course I made it home safely and in my bed around 2am. It was another long day but, I was really happy to spend some time with some special people in my life.

I know, it's been a month since I wrote. I have been keeping busy with shows .. and that's a good thing. It appears that spring has finally sprung in the Chicagoland area. It's nice to have the windows open even for a little while .. I love the fresh air.
I'm trying to remember where I've been these past few weeks. I met up with some friend downtown to see Ace Frehley at the House of Blues. I don't go into the city too often but, I had to see one of my childhood heroes. Ace of course is one of the original members of KISS .. and you know that's my band. The show started late .. almost 10:30 on a weeknight, yes .. I'm an old man now. It was loud and yes, I got my earplugs out. Nothing is worse that that annoying ringing in your ear for the next day or two. The concert was awesome .. they played a lot of old tunes I haven't heard in years. Ace hasn't been on the road in while but, he didn't let anyone down .. still amazing with his guitar.
Sundays journey brought me to a little town along Historic Route 66. The show went well and the weather was beautiful for a drive. After my show I couldn't help but pull over when I saw this giant figure along side the road ... it was HUGE! Of course I had to take a pic for my site .. and grab a hot dog while I was at the Launching Pad in Wilmington, IL. When I have time, I always stop at these little places ... it makes the journey all worth while.

An Apple a Day ...
Thursday, April 10, 2008
Have I got a fun story for you ... so, I'm raking the leaves yesterday .. that should have been done last fall. I'm a little behind but, I'm slowly catching up on things. Anyway .. I'm picking up little bits of trash that accumulated over the winter. Something shiny catches my eye .. and sure enough, it's the iPod I lost back in December. I thought for sure it fell out of my pocket at the hospital when I took my mother in for a doctors appointment. I remember going back the next day searching the parking lot, the hallways .. and checking repeatedly with the lost and found department. Of course I turned to eBay to quickly replace my little electronic friend .. I actually have a couple of back ups now. I really can't live without it for long.
Remember it's been exposed to the elements for four months and it's been a rough winter. Not only that ... but, how did it wind up in the brush fifteen feet away from the driveway .. and could it still work?? Well, I think I solved the mystery .. kinda like an episode of Monk. The iPod must have slipped out of my jacket on December 6th in the driveway, after my mothers appointment. I noticed it was missing later that night when I went to go for a walk. We had plenty of snow on and off that week .. and it must have went through the snowblower. There are black marks clearly visible on the outer protective case. This is just as I found it outside (see above.) Would it still power up?? Believe it or not .. it did, and after a full charge it's back in working order again. I can't believe it myself ... but then again, it is an Apple!

Biting My Tongue ...

Nothing gets my blood boiling faster than watching Drew Peterson spew his filth on national TV. The only reason he and his sidekick lawyer are on these shows is to "cast reasonable doubt" when this case goes to trail. There is so much to this story and yes, I take it personally because Stacy Peterson was a personal friend of mine. She was a beautiful person that just got mixed up with the wrong guy .. a much older guy. I get sick to my stomach when I see his face ... and yet I've got to watch what I say because he's "lawyered up."
Yes, I was the "friend" that received an e-mail from Stacy stating that Drew was becoming abusive only days before she went missing. I have them to back up my story and yes, I have turned them in as evidence against Drew. Back in November I was on all the shows covering the story .. yes, that's where you saw me. I will do everything I can so justice will prevail and my friend Stacy can finally rest in peace. This story has a life of it's own and it's far from over. I know I will be involved when this all goes down. I just can't wait for that day, and the truth will finally prevail ...

This Old Magic Shop ...
Wednesday, April 23, 2008
So, I had some time open on Saturday afternoon and decided to go into the city to visit a couple of the few remaining "brick and mortar" magic shops. I met up with fellow magician, Paul Lee for lunch and we were on our way. Our first stop was Magic Inc. on Lincoln Ave. It's actually one of the oldest magic shops in the country.
Years ago you would find Jay Marshall roaming just behind the counter. I've been coming here since I was a kid. It's still a thrill to see all the "stuff" on the shelves, the walls .. and even the ceiling! There's always something new and I love learning magic .. just like when I was young. We bought a couple of things and then off to Ash's Magic on Western. Of course Mr. Ash was out doing a show .. putting both of us to shame. He's got to be in his 60's or so and he's still performing. I always get a kick out of watching him .. he's just a naturally funny guy. He just has a way of telling his stories .. and his accent, it always gets me. In a loving way .. his shop is like a garage sale of magic. There are tricks, masks, jokes and books ... everywhere. Only Mrs. Ash can quickly navigate the shelves and find what you're looking for. We dropped some cash there and it was time to get back home. We were going to meet up with some friends for dinner and a show.
This past month has been really surprising. I've been doing quite a few last minute shows for the Cub Scouts. Apparently it's "Abracadabra" month for the boys and I'm always glad to perform for them. These are smaller gigs by myself but, I still have a nice program just for these groups. I was just getting into magic right around the same age when I was in Cub Scouts. When we had a magician for the Blue and Gold banquet .. it had a huge impact on me. Hopefully I've done the same for the next generation of wizards.
In other news, my mother has made the journey down to Florida for two weeks. I rarely have any time to myself and I've always got a lot to catch up on. Her schedule is filled with doctors appointments and I'm the driver. She took care of me when I was young, now I have to take care of her. Of course I'm making the most of my new found freedom .. I can't believe all the things I did just yesterday.
Today should be a fun time .. my good friend David Seebach is in town for some work in Chicago. He's taking the train this afternoon to visit and stay at the Chezaday "Bed N' Breakfast." We'll meet up with Paul and Val at Buffalo Wild Wings in Warrenville for some dinner. It's always interesting when David comes out .. he always helps me with the effects I'm working on. His knowledge of magic far exceeds my own. He's an amazing performer who really cares about the art of magic. I too respect it as an art form that should be preserved.
After all ... todays magic is tomorrows science.

Magic in the Air ...
Thursday, May 8, 2008
Thing's are finally warming up out here ... and it seems as if magic is everywhere these days. Last week there was a Magic Flea Market that was very successful. Magicians from the Chicago area set up their tables and cleaned house. It's kind of like a magic garage sale .. some treasures can be found after sifting through all the junk. I usually have a table but, this year I just went to take a look. I wound up talking with friends the whole time ... I really didn't get to look at much. Here I am with my young friend Magic Jess. She's currently living in a castle ... no joke! What better place for a princess to live.
This week David Letterman is featuring magicians on his show, which is very cool. Years ago he would tear into "Kmarr the Discount Magician." It was a funny bit but made magicians look pretty pathetic. This time around he's got some of the top magicians direct from Vegas including Lance Burton and Penn & Teller. I'll be watching again tonight.
I'm also teaching mini course today at an elementary school near by. The kids really enjoy learning a few tricks to fool their friends. The class is so popular that we've got two classes going on. My assistant Angel is teaching the second group. It's a lot to prepare but I enjoy giving back to the local community.
The past couple weeks flew by. My mother is back from Florida with her friends. She got to relax ... and I finally had some time to get some things done for myself. I was surprised at what I could get done in a day without distractions. Right now I'm preparing for a couple of shows we have at the Carol Stream Fest. We're bringing the big show and that involves a lot of work. We'll be on the Main Stage at 4:30 and 6:30pm on June 8th. If you live in the area, come out and have a fun time .. I know I will.

Once You Know the Secret ...
Friday, May 30, 2008
Where to start, it seems another month has flown by and we're still waiting for summer to arrive. Memorial day was hot .. in the 80's and then it dropped like 40 degrees over night. Plenty of rain over here, my grass seems to finally be filling in ... I've been working on that for years.
My mother returned from two weeks in Florida with a touch of something. She wound up in the hospital for almost a week and made it home in time for our little cook-out last Monday. This was my puppy Rex's first grilling experience. He was a bit confused that we were eating on the porch. The tray of hot dogs and hamburgers was within his reach. He helped himself to a snack .. it was pretty funny.
We are preparing for our summer festival shows right now. Angel came over to try out some new things that we'll be using soon. There's a lot of work behind the scenes that many don't realize. The props, the routines, the costumes, the music and so on. It all comes down to the last minute and once the show gets going, it's like a roller coaster. I guess it's the best way to describe it .. it doesn't stop until it's over.
Last night I took some time off to visit one of my close friends, Marshall Brodien. In the magic world .. he's a living legend. His TV Magic Cards and Magic Sets are probably responsible for getting more kids into magic than anyone else .. including Lance Burton and myself.
I can't tell you the trill it was to play with my magic set after school when I was just a little magi. I've written about Marshall many times before, he's one of my heroes. We went back and forth showing each other card tricks .. fooling each other and then sharing each of their secrets. Even at his age, he still fooled me many times over. He's been an inspiration to thousands of magicians all over the world .. I'm lucky enough to call him my good friend.

Feast or Famon ...
Thursday, June 5, 2008
It always seems to be the case around here. Last weekend I was all over the place, now it's days later and I can't even remember where I've been. Oh, now I remember .. last Sunday I ventured back to my old hometown of Brookfield to perform in a dance recital. Ya .. a dance recital, no .. I didn't strap on my Capezio's. My job was simply to add a little magic between things so the girls had time to change. Here you'll see the girls ready for the Annie number. The show went really well and only ran just over two hours ... a record for one of Ann's productions.
I did take a quick trip past my old house, it was really fun to see the old neighborhood I grew up in. Much of it was just the same, they did rebuild the park I use to play in. By todays standards it would have been considered a death trap with the lack of safety rails and lead paint. Some how I managed to stay alive without all those safe guards .. go figure. Almost forgot .. the fallout sign. This was on the school I performed at earlier in the day. Yes it was that interesting that I had to take a pic of it .. and it's pretty worn as you can see. I remember this very sign from when I was a kid.
I never really understood what it was but, it was the original from at least 35 years ago or so. It of course was a different time and most of you don't even know what a fallout shelter is. You can look it up online .. we didn't have the Internet back then either, how did we survive??
As soon as I was packed up it was off to Max & Erma's in Woodridge for my close up gig. It was a long, yet productive day .. I probably worked on more stuff when I got home. Anyway .. the very next day it was off to Batavia to work with some fellow performers at one of the schools. I was joined by Ken Mate, Circus Boy and even the legendary Marshall Brodien.
We entertained the crowd of well over 500 screaming kids. Afterwards we had a nice lunch together and it was back home to get ready for Rex's training .. after all it was Monday night. The days are long .. eventually I do get some rest. I'm usually out minutes after my head hits the pillow ... go figure.

Hot and Sticky ...
Monday, June 9, 2008
We've been preparing for our summer season for weeks now. Our first festival was in Carol Stream just yesterday .. and it was a hot one. The weather has been questionable all weekend with storms, rain and wind passing through our area. I was ready for just about anything .. but, it was still a difficult set up. Only minutes before we left I changed a few things on the show list as the wind would make things even more complicated. As you can see two different versions of the show.
The festival grounds were wet, as to be expected and the backstage area was tight for me to back the van into. We used our ramp to get the props up to the stage and began the setup. We had to work around two other acts sharing the stage, and that can be tricky. We have big show with a lot of equipment. The wind was cutting through but the skies cleared up for us to perform. The temps started to rise and it was humid .. we were melting in the sun. Former Chezababe Juli joined us on stage as a volunteer for our Spikes illusion. It was a while back when she did shows ... so, it was all new to her.
In between shows we had a chance to sample some of the fair food and it was pretty good. My brother Jeff found some unusual items including a deep fried ear of corn. I of course couldn't fill up on any of the junk as we had another show to do.
After our second show was over .. it was time to pack it up and roll everything back down the ramp into the van. It was a long, hot day .. but we all survived. Our summer season has only begun ...

Danny Boy Returns ...
Monday, June 16, 2008
He was in for just a few days .. but, he had me going like it was a race against time. We had a lot to accomplish before it was back the WGM Show in Vegas on Saturday evening. I picked him up Thursday afternoon and we grabbed a quick lunch at Charley's. It's actually my new favorite sandwich shop .. try the chicken teriaki. From there it was off to Dan's secret "Warehouse of Illusions" .. or simply the Public Storage on Rt 38. It was time to clear it out and ship the remaining illusions off to his new hometown. It was a good thing I emptied the van ahead of time .. because it got full ... pretty fast as you can see.
Next stop was the little town of Geneva. we had to pick up a car and a dove for a show Dan had Friday morning .. at all places but a Kinder Care, go figure. While we were in the area we stopped by for a quick visit with the "Godfather of Magic" .. none other than Marshall Brodien. Dan showed up with an Easter basket full of eggs .. go figure. Marshall was excited to show us the new TV Magic Cards that will be in stores soon. Of course they are the very same cards that got me interested in magic years ago.
It was time to head back home as we were all going out to dinner for my brother's birthday. We met up with Paul, Val and my mother for some fine dining at Maggiano's Little Italy in Naperville. It was a fun time and we had plenty of food to take home. You'll have to figure out who's who in the photo.
Dan was up early on Friday for his show, I was up soon afterwards to take care of things around the house. When he returned we were off to Forward Air to get his props off to Vegas. That was a whole ordeal itself .. but, I won't get into that.
Friday night we grabbed some dinner at the Colonial Cafe. Our favorite waitress was there .. and looking good. It was already after nine and we still had to drop off the car and dove that Dan borrowed. We stayed to visit with fellow magician Mark Holstein and caught up on things. It was after midnight by the time we got back to my house. Dan's flight was in the morning .. so we had to get up early once again.
As I always say .. "No rest for the Wicked!"

I Be Shakin' ...
Wednesday, July 9, 2008
I see a bad pattern here .. it's almost been a month since I wrote, what's up with that. Of course it's summertime and I'm always doing something. In the past month we went to the Kane County Cougars game, I won a bunch of useless junk on ebay and attended the Naperville Ribfest three of the four nights. I saw Ted Nugent, REO Speedwagon and Joan Jett .. oh, and I did a couple of shows here and there. As you can see .. it's been a busy summer.
The big news around here is the local Taco Bell has closed it's doors. I still get teary eyed when I think of it. I'm there almost every other day for lunch .. for real. I know it's not the healthiest choice .. but, I'm hooked on that Mountain Dew Baja Blast. I'm starting to shake just thinking of that refreshing drink. I was under the impression they were simply going to knock it down and rebuild. The other day a "For Lease" sign popped up .. it seems that it's gone for good. Now my "Run for the Boarder" will be a longer drive .. 4.6 miles to be exact. Ya .. I'm a freak.
Today one of my good friends from California stopped by for a visit, in fact I think it's been over twenty years since he's been over. Craig Dickens is one of the top illusion builders in the country .. in fact you should check out his work at dickensmagic.com. Craig was originally from the Chicagoland area years ago. He's been building and performing magic for over 30 years now. We had fun going back and forth with the latest "magic" gossip. After a quick lunch at Portillio's we unpacked a few illusions so he could get a close up view of my favorites. A couple of the newer illusions we hope to have in the show for the fall .. so, we'll see.
In a few weeks I'll be heading out to the Abbott's Magic Get-Together in Colon Michigan for a few days of relaxation. I really don't get much of that anymore .. but, it will be nice to get away. Until then .. I've got to get some sleep, it's already after 2:00am and Criss Angel's Mindfreak is on. One episode after another, it's bedtime already ...

Summer Magic ...
Monday, July 28, 2008
Its hot out and summer is just flying by. Next week I'll be heading out to Abbott's. In many ways its been a long year and I'll have a bit of explaining to do about all the television appearances I made last fall. If you've been keeping up with me .. you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.
I keep busy but things have definitely slowed down as compared to last summer. The economy really hits the entertainment industry .. hard. With the price of gas and everything else that goes with it, you can imagine the cost of producing a show has increased. On top of all that .. everyones budget is getting tighter and tighter. Of course this is affecting everyone and hopefully things will eventually turn around .. it can't get much worse.
Last Saturday I took some time to visit my little buddies out in Marseilles, IL. Their church was sponsoring a special "Movie in the Park" night and I entertained the kids before dark. I got out there early so I could spend some time with Tyler and Colin. You'll have to go back and read about them too ... it's a long story. Anyway the boys are getting big, last time I saw them was in February. Tyler is almost seven and Colin will be four on his mothers birthday in November. We played in the park before the crowd arrived. Any time I have with them is very special .. its hard to put in words.
I stayed for part of the movie and sat with the boys. It was getting late and I still had over an hour to drive home. A lot goes through my mind on the way home, its still a very sad story. Of course, I'll be lucky enough to see the boys grow up as time goes by. I can see a little bit of Tina in both of them.
I'm sure she's watching from above ...

Goin' Down ...
Tuesday, August 5, 2008
Not every show goes as planned and last night was a mess. We had storms earlier in the day but things seem to clear up. Our show was an early evening show for the Wheaton Park District. It was part of the "Summer in the Park" series on Monday nights. Tony and I arrived with plenty of time to set up. It was hot and sticky but the skies were clear. I checked out the band shell ahead of time .. so I knew exactly what to expect. Nothing is better than relaxing and watching a show under the stars .. well, most of the time.
As show time drew closer the sky grew darker, the trees were still. No reason to panic just yet. The crowd started to arrive around 7:00pm with our show starting half an hour later. I was tempted to start early but, there were still more people showing up. As a precaution we decided to move the whole show back and bring the audience up on stage with us. Tony, Paul and Val went into action and within minutes I calmly told everyone they were going to get to see the show "up close." Just as we got things started the tornado alarm could be heard in the background. A light rain just began to fall .. and my little fans sat patiently. I'm not one to give up without a fight but, I was more concerned with everyones safety. I had to call the show .. I told them I would come back some time soon. Everyone understood .. it was obviously out of my hands. Everyone else got to their cars before it hit. We scrambled to get the props in their cases as fast as we could. The rain and lightning surrounded us .. the band shell kept us safe.
I felt a little like the captain of the Titanic, I wasn't going to leave my ship .. well, my props at least. Once everything was packed we stacked it against the back wall and ran for cover until the storm passed. We waited about a half hour and went back to load the van. Needless to say .. we were soaked to the bone, but we all survived. My little fans made it home safely and thats all that really matters.
Tomorrow I hit the road for a few days in Colon Michigan for the Abbott's Magic Get-Together. I'm sure I'll have a few interesting stories from on the road. Stay tuned ..

My Amish Adventure ...
Wednesday, August 20, 2008
Well, not exactly ... I made the journey to Colon Michigan a few weeks back now. One thing after another comes up, and I'm a few adventures behind. Lets see what I can remember from this years Abbott's Magic Get-Together. As soon as I arrived on Wednesday .. it was right to work. I'm part of the Abbott's stage crew and we were preparing for the evening show .. and it was a big one, including a 350 pound tiger! My good friend David Seebach was performing and hosting the event. The stage was filled with props and illusions. Our job of course is to make things run smoothly during the show, setting the props, pulling curtains and so on. The first night went off without a hitch .. and no one was eaten by the tiger, always a plus. After the show it was time to "load out" and then get something to eat at the Five Star Pizza. It was well after midnight by the time my head hit the pillow at the Coldwater Red Roof Inn.
The convention consists of contests, lectures during the day and the big show at night. In between events we wander the quiet streets of Colon. Along side the Amish buggies there are yard sales, lemonade stands and even a craft fair. The weather was refreshing .. usually it's a bit humid this time of year. Thursday was a blur .. but Friday my good friend Devlin was the feature act on the evening show.
He brought in lots of big equipment and that means lots of work backstage. After the close-up show in the afternoon, it was time for rehearsal. We run through the lighting, music cues and prop placement. It does take some time but it really shows once the curtain goes up. Here we are after the show .. a bit tired, but in one piece.
Saturday is the last day and it's a long one. Theres a lecture in the morning .. I opted for sleep, I do have my priorities. I had lunch with Carol and Julie at the Magi Cafe and then it was time for the afternoon matinee show. Four big shows down and one more to go.
The stage crew is treated to a pizza party before the Saturday night show and then its back to work. Tonights show featured the Great Tomsoni, a comedic legend in the world of magic. The auditorium was full and Wilma begins with the opening music. After our last show its time to tear it all down and return the stage the way we found it. The crew is nearly finished within an hour after the crowds leave. It was time for me to hit the road and head back home, traveling in the dark of night. Another year has passed and everyone is a little bit older. I've been attending every year for over 25 years now .. I'm going to be one of the old timers soon!

The Vomit Room ...
Wednesday, August 27, 2008
Well, it's not what you think .. actually it kind of is. I'll get back to that in a bit. I'm still a few weeks behind here but, I've been pretty busy .. I promise I'll catch up eventually. After a few days in the country, it was off to the city to visit some friends. First stop was the factory of Fun Inc. on the west side of Chicago. My friends John Sturk and Tomas take care of things in the office. John promised me the tour ... and I finally took him up on it. Fun Inc. is one of the countries largest manufacturers of magic and novelties .. including, you guessed it ... fake vomit. It was very cool .. rows and rows of shelving filled with magic and gags. I was amazed at the amount of stock they have .. it was everywhere!
Most of their kits and products find their way into the consumer market. It's actually how I got started with my first magic kit by none other than Marshall Brodien. This was back in the 70's when TV Magic was on every other commercial. Of course Fun Inc. made most of the products in those kits and before that, they made the prizes you found in Cracker Jack. Now I am sounding like an old dude ... back to the tour.
In one area they work on card tricks, assembling special trick decks. Around the corner are the
injection mold machines that melt pellets of plastic into pieces like the Ball & Vase or the Spiked Coin. Favorites of mine when I was just getting started. We headed upstairs to an area that was a wood shop at one point in time. Then John brought me into .. the "Vomit Room." It was just a little room set aside where they stir up a small batch of fake vomit at a time. As he told me .. each one is different, like a snow flake. I'm glad they take their job so serious. After the tour it was off for a quick lunch at Applebee's. John really gave a great tour .. I could have been there all day.
My next stop was at Rush University to visit a good friend in the hospital .. and I wasn't sure how that was going to go. I was pleasantly surprised to see Greg Bordner sitting up in a chair playing with a laptop computer. Greg is the owner of Abbott's Magic in Colon Michigan. He's been in the hospital for a few months now awaiting a very serious heart operation. For all he's been through .. he looked great. I could tell he was surprised and happy to see me. We visited for about an hour and I left him with a special movie to watch called "Big Fish." It's one of my favorites .. and if your a performer, you'll understand why.
It was time to head back home, just in time for rush hour. It was a bit warm so, pulled off the expressway to grab a cold drink at Mc Donald's. I used my trusty little Magellan GPS unit to guide my way. Lets just say .. I was a little out of place in a bright red Hummer. I quickly made my way back to the main road and off to the suburbs where I belong. Don't worry .. I made it back alive.

Next Show at 4:00 PM ...
Tuesday, September 2, 2008
It seems that lately everyday is a new adventure .. well something is going on at least. After a couple of shows on the weekend it was time to head up to Wisconsin with the boys. Paul and I met up with my brother and his friend Jeff up in the Dells. If you were watching the news earlier this summer, you may have seen Lake Delton literally vanish. They had heavy rains over a short period of time and the lake began to rise. Before you know it ... one of the highways gave way and the lake emptied into the Wisconsin River. Luckily no one was killed but, some homes were lost. It was an awesome sight .. you can't mess with mother nature.
Our first stop was an "all you can eat" breakfast at Paul Bunyan's. Not much has changed since we use to go there with my parents. My dad could really fill up on breakfast while mother would sneak a few donuts in her purse for later. We met up with our good friend Jeremy Schurtz and checked out his "secret warehouse of illusions"
or what most others would say ... his storage unit. There we found some treasures from the past .. including some of the hand made wands that Paul would sell after his show in the Dells. We had a fun time just rummaging around and hearing some of the stories Jeremy recalled.
Later that evening we had tickets to see the Rick & Susan Wilcox Magic Show. They are both good friends of mine and have worked very hard to get to where they are at. Its an amazing family show that everyone traveling through should see. They even have their own theater complete with state-of-the-art sound and lighting. The 90 minute show goes by fast .. all the latest magic and illusions are blended well from beginning to end. After wards we usually go to Uno's for some pizza and wind up chatting until after close. I really enjoy spending time with them .. very down to earth. Before we left Rick offered us a tour of Lake Delton .. or at least whats left of it. Of course we couldn't pass that up .. and we would meet the next day after lunch.
It was a late night .. but, we'll skip past some of those details. I just remember seeing the alarm clock read 3:36am as my head hit the pillow. For some reason I was up around 9:30 and everyone else was still out cold. I decided to jump in the pool for a little bit .. and boy that was refreshing. No one else was insight .. and the water was just right. It helped me clear my head a bit .. then it was time to get the others up. We went downtown to Culver's and had a few burgers. I think we had some time to spare .. so, it was back to the Ho Chunk Casino for a brief visit. I think I dropped about $20.00 and called it quits .. I just can't see throwing my money away.
Back to the story .. we met up at Rick and Susan's beautiful home on the lake. We actually passed it a couple of times using the GPS .. but, we eventually found it. After a quick tour of the house we ventured off into the back .. and there was nothing left of the lake. If you look close you'll even see a few deer passing through .. its very strange. Rick had some amazing footage of a few homes that actually washed away.
Our plan was to head back home later that night and Rick invited us to see the show again. I of course can't pass up a magic show .. so, Paul and I went again. It was after 9pm when the show let out .. then Rick wanted to grab something to eat with us. I can't say no to him .. we had too much fun the other night. It was off to Monk's and then we had to hit the road .. it was getting late. We were hungry and I wanted to try the "breakfast burger." Let me just tell you .. it's on the top of my all time favorite burgers right now .. wow. Paul thought I was out of my mind .... but it was good.
It was after 11pm and we still had like three hours of driving ahead of us. I was already pretty beat but managed to drive about half way. Paul took over the second half of the drive while I fell asleep in the back seat like I use to when I was a kid. By the time I made it home from his house .. it was just about 3:30am. I just have to remember, I'm not 20 years old anymore ...

Now .. Where Did I Leave Off??
Monday, September 29, 2008
Last time I wrote was maybe a month ago .. I can't tell you how busy I've been the last few weeks, but I'll try. First things first .. I've got to wrap up my summer adventures before I write about my recent trip to Tennessee. It's almost 2am and I'm wide awake .. so here goes.
As soon as I returned from the Dells, it was back to work. Besides a few shows on the weekend I was also training the new girl .. Jacqueline. She will be joining the long list of Chezababes that have shared the stage with me. It's been a while since I've trained someone ... and there is a lot to learn. She seems to be picking up on things just fine. She's really excited about performing and I think the kids will just love her.
It's the last week of August and it was time to catch up with some friends and have some fun.
Angel was working with my buddy John, so I went out to see the show. We all haven't been together for a long time and we had a nice dinner afterward. John and I have been friends for well over twenty years. We met at one of the local magic clubs when we were just getting started. Time sure does fly when you're having fun.
The very next day we took a little road trip up north to see Alice Cooper. Every time he's in town .. I'm there. The show was in a beautifully restored theater in Waukegan, IL. Alice never fails to get the crowd stirred up. After the show it was time for a late night snack at the tollway oasis .. nothing like a healthy meal at midnight.
To finally wrap up summer we had a little cook out at my house. Joining in the fun was Valerie, Paul, Tony and little Jacqueline. My brother Jeff worked the grill and mother made a few things to go along with the meal. We all sat back and relaxed a bit for a change. It wasn't long before we broke out the balloons and learned a few new twists. It was getting late and there was a chill in the air .. looks like summer is just a memory once again.

Beyond Belief ... Part One
Friday, October 10, 2008
As I write fall has settled in, its just about 60 degrees out and its been raining on and off all day. The leaves are changing color and many are falling to the ground. I'm actually watching the presidential debate and trying to catch up on some things on my desk.
We're going to go back now .. about a month and I'd like to tell you about my little adventure to Pigeon Forge Tennessee. One of my best friends has made his home down there and just last year got his own theater. Terry and I grew up together out here in the suburbs of Chicago. He wasn't even driving the first time he came over to visit. I think he was taken back by the amount of equipment I had amassed over the years. It wouldn't take long for him to catch up though .. it was almost like a little game.
My flight out was delayed .. and by the time I finally arrived in Knoxville it was almost 1am.
Terry had just finished performing a few hours earlier and was waiting patiently. I figured he would be tired by the time we arrived at his house .. but, he gave me the full tour of his house. It was probably around 4am by the time I went to bed. Lets just say .. its Halloween all year long at Terry's house. Each room has a different theme in fact it even has one of those sliding bookcases to reveal a hidden stairway .. for real. Even the bed I slept in was underneath the floor of a small stage he had set up in the living room. In one corner was a sarcophagus and in the other was a full-size skeleton sitting comfortably in a chair. Perfectly healthy .. perfectly normal.
I was up early as Terry was having a deck added on .. and they were making a bit of noise. I quickly discovered there was no TV and I left my laptop at home. I did have a few things to read to occupy the time. Our first stop of the day was to meet up with Tammy for lunch. She worked with Terry for over twenty years on and off stage. It was great to catch up with her. Afterward Terry showed me around town, we had some dinner and it was showtime. Terry's show is a the Magic Beyond Belief theater on the main strip. Its been his dream to have his own show, in his own theater .. and sure enough .. his dreams have come true. I can't tell you how proud I am of him .. he really deserves it. He's worked hard all his life to achieve this. He's been trying to get me down to see the show for quite some time .. and finally I made it out.
The show looks like a million bucks .. his performance is flawless. With over 700 performances in the last year and a half .. its no wonder how good he is. If your ever in the area .. don't miss it, trust me .. you won't be disappointed. I don't know how he does a full 90 minute show, sometime twice a day .. every day. Maybe that would explain why he sleeps until noon.
After the show I got the backstage tour .. which was just as amazing. There's even a special habitat set up for the tiger in the show .. a real 450 pound royal white tiger! With all the illusions and other equipment involved in the show .. there's barely room to move backstage. The dressing rooms are tiny and hidden behind the back curtain with just enough room to make the next costume change. It was time to head back and rest up for day two!

Beyond Belief .. Part Two
Wednesday, October 15, 2008
Again its a few days later and I'm trying to catch up on things around here. I had to turn the heat on as it has dipped into the 50's at night. Fall is definitely in the air with the smell of burning leaves surrounding the area. Now back to the story.
My good friend Erick Olson was also going to be in town to perform for a resort. I actually planned my trip so I could spend time with both of my buddies. We met up with Erick for lunch and went back and forth with stories from the past. Erick is originally from Wisconsin and moved to Florida over ten years ago. We all keep in touch by phone, but we were finally together in person. After lunch I gathered my things and jumped in Erick's mini-van. I was staying in his suite the next two nights .. after all they had a TV in my room. Erick was actually performing that night and we would go see Terry's show right after he was finished. It was a private group so I stole the mini-van and headed over to Wal Mart to grab a few things for the room. Erick finished right on time and it was a short drive down the strip to Terry's theater.
Before we arrived Terry had set aside some tickets for us. Sure enough he also told the girl in the ticket booth to give me a hard time. She had me going .. trying to spell my name a few different ways and so on.
We walked in just as the show was starting. It was fun to share the experience with Erick, we all grew up together. After the show we were all going to Tammie's house for a little gathering. It had been quite a few years since we were all together. I can't tell you how much fun we had watching some old videos from one of our tours. Once again it was a late night .. but, I'm on vacation.
After a bit of rest, I was up watching the commercials for the local attractions. We were planning on going to Dollywood after lunch with Terry, so we had some time to kill. We drove to downtown Gatlinburg for a little shopping while we waited for Terry's call to meet up with him. Sure enough he arrived at Dollywood just before us .. he said "it was like Wally World." Confused .. I asked, "no one is there?" Sure enough the park was closed during the week.
I guess we should have checked the fall schedule. Instead we met up with a few others from the show to see "Miracles" afternoon show. We made it just in time .. of course I didn't want to keep Jesus waiting. It was an amazing production, complete with flying angels .. and of course a singing Judas. We got a backstage tour and even met the Devil in his street clothes .. he wears plaid shorts, glasses and sandals .. go figure. Later that day Terry set us up with tickets to the Black Bear Jamboree dinner show. We had some time to kill so the cards came out and Erick and Terry showed me a few things. They have been doing card magic from the beginning .. I'm still learning.
After the evening shows we all met up for a late night snack at Mel's Dinner. It would be the last time we got together before I had to head home the next day. The years have passed but, we've all stayed close friends.
The next day, Friday .. things were heating up. I wasn't heading back until later that afternoon so, Erick and I wondered up and down the strip to see the car show. We grabbed some lunch at Fudruckers and it was off to the airport. I was flying stand-by so I had to cross my fingers to get on a flight. Back home we had storms .. all day. There were two flights left out of Tennessee and after a two hour delay .. they announced the first flight was cancelled. My hopes of getting home started to fade .. everyone on the first flight would just fill up the last one .. right? I had already been at the airport since 3:30pm and it was almost 8:30pm. I'm not one for sitting still .. but I patiently waited. The nice lady at the counter slipped me a ticket for the last flight out .. and I was finally on my way home. The fun and laughs we had together made it all worth while ...

Fast Forward ...
Thursday, November 6, 2008
So much to catch up on .. I'll see if I can fit it all in one post. At the time I'm writing, we've been enjoying 70 degree weather here in Chicago and we've got a new President from right here. We should all support him and our country and hopefully things will turn around for all of us. He's got many challenges ahead of him .. but, lets face it .. you couldn't do much worse than our last choice. Maybe I should give it a shot in a few years??
It's been a very busy month for me .. and I'm very thankful that I'm in demand. I've barely had enough time to think .. then I'm out the door once again for another gig. That's my actual desk calendar .. simply chaotic. Just a few weeks ago, I added Buffalo Wild Wings in Naperville to my schedule. You can see magic up close and personal on Wednesdays from 5-8pm. It's family night and the food is great .. you should stop by if your in the area. Now lets see if I can finally get caught up once and for all.
After my trip to Tennessee I returned to record rains in the area. I was lucky enough to get home the day before. The park near my house became a lake that over flowed into the street. We were very lucky there was no flooding in our immediate area.
Only days later it would be Jacqueline's very first show. We had been preparing for her premier for many weeks now. Angel came along to make sure things went smooth. There is so much to learn as the on stage assistant, it can be overwhelming. She did just fine and the show went well. My good friend Paul Lee and Jeremy Schurtz from Wisconsin came to see the show and gave us a hand packing up.
We stopped at a near by Culver's for some lunch. The timing was just right for them to stop by .. I'm glad they did.
Now we're into October and things are really picking up. I'm scheduled at the Naperville Settlement for three shows a night in the middle of the "Haunted Graveyard. These would be the last outdoor shows of the season for me .. so, I had my fingers crossed. The set-up was pretty cool .. tombstones, fog and a mausoleum as my backstage area. My props were set inside and I could grab them as I needed. The first show went just fine .. then it began to rain. The crowds were still coming through .. and sitting down for a show. I really couldn't turn them away .. and wound up doing additional shows .. in the rain.
My temporary backstage area offered little protection .. as it had no roof. I must be out of my mind .. in the rain and standing in mud. The next night I spread hay in my working area and that really helped out. This time I would face a new challenge .. the cold. There were even more people showing up for some Halloween fun .. again I wound up adding shows. Next year .. my fee goes up!
We're almost caught up .. now its the week of Halloween. I've still got a few private gigs and then "Jackie's Magic" on Saturday. Jacqueline was actually scheduled for this weeks shows but wound up sick .. very sick. She's slowly getting better .. but in the mean time, the show goes on. Valerie and Angel stepped up and filled in for her. On Halloween we found ourselves in the little town of Hampshire, IL. The show went just fine and its always great to see the kids in their costumes. Afterward, Angel was having a little gathering and we had a good time just relaxing for a change. The next night was a big show that featured half a dozen other acts on the same bill. We were closing the show, so we brought in a few extra things to make the it special. We had a little extra backstage help that really made a difference.

On the far left is Tony and on the far right is Angel's boyfriend Anthony. They helped things run smoothly and even had everything packed while we were signing autographs. It was getting late .. and of course we haven't had dinner yet. We joined up with the other acts at the iHop in Gurnee and had breakfast. We all had a good time and it's even better sharing the stage with some of your friends. Now I think you're all caught up .. I've got to get Rex out for his walk and take mother to her exercise class .. but, I do have tonight off for a change!

Flannel Sheets ...
Friday, November 14, 2008
Yes, it's getting colder .. much colder around here. I guess we're even going to get a mix of snow this weekend .. but that can only be expected as it is the middle of November. It was even time to break out the flannel sheets once again.
Question: Where does a 95 pound German Shepherd sleep??
Answer: Anywhere he wants.
There's always something going on around here .. so let me see what I can fill you in on. On today's agenda .. raking leaves. Ya .. I know the life of a star. If I don't get out there today it will never get done and it will only be a mess for winter.
We've had a few birthdays over here ... one of our Chezababes, Valerie turned 29 again. So it was a short trip over to Cracker Barrel to celebrate. She actually loves going over there .. I like it too. Valerie has been with my show for 14 years or so .. I can't even remember. She's pretty much family now .. Happy Birthday Babe.
The next morning I was invited to surprise my good friend and fellow magician, Ken Mate.
He'll actually be turning 50 next week ... but we're keeping it quiet, here on the Internet. Ken is an amazing performer .. and a great guy on and off stage. We've worked all over the Midwest together .. for many years. He's always on the phone trying to talk me into one of his crazy ideas, actually some .. not so crazy. Over the years he has helped guide me to become a better performer. I'm very thankful for his friendship. Joining in the fun from left to right: Marshall Brodien, Mr. Ash and Bobby Schulien. Ken of course is the old dude in the back .. Happy Birthday Ken!
Now it's time to prepare for our holiday programs. We're getting everything ready for a fast "set-up" as some days we're performing in multiple locations. It's all part of the game .. everyone wants the same day, same time. There's only one of me at the moment .. but, I'm working on it.
Before I forget, I want to share one more photo with you of one of my special friends .. Collin. He just turned four and on his birthday he got to visit the local Fire Department in Marseilles, IL. Collin is Tina's little boy .. you'll have to go back and read up on her, it's a long story.
Happy birthday little buddy, you mean the world to me ...

It's That Time of Year ...
Saturday, December 13, 2008
If you haven't guessed by now .. I've been a bit busy these last few weeks. I just wanted to write a quick note before I pass out. It's been a long day .. I just got home about an hour ago, then I had to go for a walk with my little buddy Rex. Now it's after midnight and I'll probably watch an episode of "Monk." I think it was actually Valerie that got me hooked on the show .. and now she calls me Monk for various reason. Yes, I can be picky about certain things .. I just look at it as being set in my ways. The thing is, the more I watch Monk .. the more I understand why he does certain things, and I would do the same. I'm not saying I'm obsessive compulsive just yet ... but, I understand. I actually took a lot of psychology back in college .. and I know a thing or two about this type of illness. Don't worry .. I think I'll be OK for now.
Anyway, I just returned from a last minute gig at the Sabre Room in Hickory Hills. It's actually a pretty fun time working with the other acts and of course the Sabrettes. I'm slowing down .. and I'll catch up on all this in a day or two. I've got some fun stories to fill you in on .. including dinner with and internationally famous magician and friend, Brett Daniels.
More in a bit .. I've got to get some rest .. my body is tired, ya .. I'm getting old.

Just One of Those Days ...
Monday, December 22, 2008
Let's just say it's been a bit cold out here in the midwest .. we've actually warmed up to 3 degrees. I'm not joking .. the other day it was well below zero, not including the wind chill. I just got in from a short walk with Rex and I've got the Bears/Packers game on right now. It's Monday Night Football in Chicago .. a stadium full of fans sitting out in the cold. They truly have got to be out of thier minds .. but the game goes on. In the background I can hear my brother coaching the team from the comfort of his bedroom. It's pretty funny when he gets all worked up. I can deal with the snow .. and we've had some of that already, but the cold is killing me. Anything above freezing would be fine around now.
As usual I've got some catching up to do .. and I'll have to look back to where I left off a few weeks ago. December has been a good month considering how things are overall with the economy. It's nothing like it was .. but I'll always find work. We had a string of shows earlier in the month, both Val and Angel took turns sharing the stage with me. I've still got a room full of gifts that need wrapping and Christmas is just two days away! I've got a fun story to share with you from years ago ... we'll get to that next time.
Now let's go back to the middle of November .. is time travel actually possible, I've often wondered. Don't worry .. that' not where this is going. Anyway .. I think it was a Friday, I had the day off and was just trying to catch up on things around the house .. that's when the phone rings. It's my friend Paul, and again .. his mini-van won't start. Now I've actually bailed him out a couple times before in this very same situation. Of course he would do the same for me .. that's a fact. So, he had a small birthday show not too far from his house. We loaded up my van, did the show and he treated me to Charley's ... I couldn't pass that up.
Little did I know a few weeks later .. my van wouldn't start when we arrived to a show. A little ironic .. but true. We're into the first week of December now and I've got a show with Val about an hour away. After checking out the room we were performing in, I went to move the van to unload. Sure enough the temps dipped pretty low that night .. and it click, click, click, it was dead. Now I was loosing time as I was performing close-up magic in an hour. The van stayed put and we rolled everything down a long hallway. After the show I crossed my fingers ... and it started up. I let it run while we gathered our things for the journey home. I lucked out that time around .. I still had a number of shows on the weekend. Overnight we had more snow but, I needed a new battery first thing. My van is already five years old .. and sure enough, that's about all you get out of the original battery. This time I wasn't playing around and went for the Die Hard SUV with 875 cold cranking amps .. I should be Ok for quite some time. I made it throught the weekend without any further complications.
I've already rambled on way too long .. I promise I'll pick up where I left off in just a few days. Until then .. stay warm, stay healthy and Merry Christmas!
